The floor was furry but it was too dark to see why. Shag carpet or animal fur, plush to the touch but creepy. Who would carpet such a dark and windowless room. The walls felt moist, perspiring from the company of the people gathered in the room. The only source of light came from a crack underneath the solid steel door, santiago leaned against it trying to peer under, the steel was cold against the side of his face as he craned his neck to grab a glimpse or a clue as to where they were. He had just woken up there about an hour ago, the last thing he could remember was somebody asking him for the time...and then cold, and dark, maybe smoke? He couldn't remember.
Julian was only ten, he had been in this place for days. He had passed the time by replaying his favorite cartoons in his head, in this strange place with no windows, he could see his animated friends living like they always had, bright and vibrant landscapes, animals that not only talked but sang and ran together. Joyous and bouncy, he wished he could grab that rabbit's hand and run with him over those bright green hills and into the purple valley below. Instead he sat and rocked back and forth, he thought that he should be hungry but since he had arrived he felt no sense of hunger or even the need to relieve himself. The last thing he remembered was a bell, he didn't see it but he heard it, he had just gone to bed, his parents had just read him a bedtime story and he was just closing his eyes and settling into his slumber, when he heard it. A small bell more of a jingle than a jangle, he thought of it as more like the bell of an elf or a small creature. It jingled down his hall and stopped in front of his room, he had kept his eyes closed, because say it was a monster isn't it better to not see it? Either there was something there or there wasn't, if it was there he did not want to see it, if it wasn't there then there was no reason to open his eyes. He heard one more sharp jingle and he had awoken here.
Jennifer was in her mid twenties, she thought that she had finally put herself on the right track, she was madly in love with a boy named Jack and she thought it was cute how both of their names started with j's, it just sounded like a couple didn't it? Jack and Jennifer, she pictured people saying "oh that Jack and Jennifer are so cute together" and they were. She had a job in the financial district managing a small office that dealt with lending, brokering, insuring, lots of ings. She considered this only a small portion of her life, those 8 hours a day she usually ignored and really just waited to get home to her Jack. Jack and Jen reunited after a tortuous day at the office, they would plop into each others arms, fit into those nooks that only a Jack and Jen would be comfortable in. Like two jigsaw puzzle pieces, they just fit, no need to force it together, they slid into each others arms like thats where they were meant to be for the rest of their lives. Jack was the last thing Jen could remember, or at least the most prominent memory, they were supposed to meet up after work at one of the bars they frequented but he had called and canceled saying he was running late on some work stuff so he would just meet her at the house. She understood but didn't really feel like going home so she grabbed a couple pints before making her way to the door and on her way home. Leaving the bar was really the last thing she remembered. Shouting, the smell of sage, and smoke? She couldn't remember
Susan was forty five and worked at the supermarket as a checkout lady. She still wore the uniform from her store as she sulkd in the corner trying to figure out what was going on. The last thing she remembered was the feeling of falling, the whoosh of air flying past her and fingers clawing at her clothes. She came to splayed out on the floor to see Julian staring at her.
Julian had been there the longest but he had never seen any of the other people arrive, they just appeared, or he wasn't watching, but he thought that he would have noticed if the door had been opened and people had been thrown in......
Leaving work yeaaaaaahh!
